Perched above the Mirna river valley, at an altitude of 277 metres above sea level, you will find one of the most distinctive landmarks of the Istrian hinterland: the famous Istrian medieval town of Motovun (Montana in Italian).
The imposing town walls and a 27-metre tall gap-toothed bell tower of the 17th-century Parish Church of St Stephen the First Martyr, built in the 13th century in the Romanesque and Gothic styles, dominate the view of the town. On the main square there is a Romanesque municipal palace from the 13th century, the largest secular building in Istria from that period. With the old town boasting a total of 26 protected cultural monuments, the entire Motovun enjoys the status of a protected cultural heritage site.
In addition to its rich cultural and historical heritage, Motovun is also known for its cuisine: local delicacies, traditional Istrian dishes and specialities with fresh truffles from the Motovun Forest, the largest habitat of white truffles (lat. Tuber Magnatum Pico) in the world.
Motovun has everything wine lovers could ask for from a wine region: award-winning winemakers, an excellent micro-location with a superb terroir, a perfect combination of white soil that lends minerality to wine, fantastic exposures, significant temperature variations and enough wind.
