In anticipation of the fourth edition of the road cycling marathon Istra Granfondo 2015, we visited one of the best organised and largest cycling events in Europe, the Salzkammergut Trophy. This event lasts three days and is chock-full of interesting features from the world of cycling, gathering over 4,600 registered participants from 25 countries while also providing excellent offers in the Bike Expo Zone, where more than 80 sellers presented the newest products from the MTB world.
At a national level, Austria is one of the most developed countries when it comes to MTB. The area of Salzkammergut, thanks to both the renowned event mentioned and its cycling tracks, is one of the favourite destinations of lovers of cycling and outdoor activities, and as such represents the perfect location for our performance and the presentation of everything we offer in Northwest Istria.
In the past few years, Northwest Istria has become an indispensable destination for cycling tourists because it offers the unique experience of cycling by the sea, through forests or through the picturesque towns located on the nearby hills.
As part of the development of cycling tourism, NW Istria has been developing road cycling, mountain biking and cycling for families and recreational cyclists. In this sense, the portfolio of products offered is truly broad and diverse: from well-marked cycling tracks and specialised bike hotels to certified bike guides, training camps and package deals for cyclists. Many professional and recreational events for road and mountain cyclists are organised in Northwest Istria – in total, more than 25 a year.
When it comes to professional events for road cyclists, we would like to highlight the races included in the UCI calendar: the 4th stage of the Tour of Croatia, the Istrian Spring Trophy and the Umag Trophy. In the category of recreational races with a competitive aspect, we are proud to be able to present the fourth edition of the international road cycling marathon Istria Granfondo, which will be held on 10 and 11 October 2015. As for mountain biking, here are the interesting races Parenzana Cube and “Lost Sheep”.
We asked several participants of Salzkammergut Trophy what they thought about our destination and about cycling in Istria, and how well-acquainted they were with what we have to offer.
I have heard about cycling in Istria and I find it very interesting but, unfortunately, I haven’t visited Istria yet. I hope to visit your region for the holidays.
Katerina, Czech Republic
I’m from the Czech Republic so, like all other Czechs, I’ve already been to Istria (laughs). I have tried out your cycling tracks and I find them very good and, of course, cooling off in the sea after a ride is the best thing ever. We come to Croatia every year and I’m certainly planning on visiting Northwest Istria again.
I come from Steiermark, Austria. I have visited Istria four times and have been to Poreč and Umag, and I have also ridden on the cycling tracks of Northwest Istria. The track I have most frequently ridden on is Parenzana – three times! I have to stress that I really like the tracks in NW Istria, particularly in the area of Momjan, and I would particularly like to compliment your cuisine. See you in September this year!
My name is Luigi, I come from Urbino and I ride for the cycling club ˝Mondo bici˝. I haven’t visited your destination yet, but I’ve heard about its development of cycling tourism and, particularly, about its offer when it comes to mountain biking. I realise that you’re not located that far away, so I’m certainly planning to visit your destination very soon, as I’ve only heard the best about it.
