Tennis and Cycling Enthusiasts, October in NW Istria is Perfect for You!

03 Oct 2019
Colours Of Tennis, Istria Granfondo

Do you like to play tennis and adore that signature sound of a tennis ball hitting a racquet? Or do you prefer the feeling of being on a bike? Maybe you are not the sports type at all, but you do love attending exciting sports events? Regardless of which of these describes you the best, there is a lot on offer for you to experience at our destination where the real sporting life resides!

We all know that there is always something interesting going on in Northwestern Istria, but October is a time when sports fans come into their own. Less than a week apart, two major sporting events are happening that have already become a trademark of the autumn season in Umag and Novigrad.

First, there’s the humanitarian couples’ tennis tournament Colours of Tennis, which will be held in Novigrad on October 12th, on the Aminess Maestral Hotel tennis courts. The unique event will bring together celebrities from the world of sports and showbiz who will demonstrate their tennis skills and certainly offer lots of fun moments. You too have a chance to play a match with any one of them, and by paying the 100 HRK registration fee, you participate in the humanitarian drive to raise funds for a radiological emergency device in Umag. Attendees and fans are also looking forward to the accompanying program, which includes raffle, Snack, Beer & Wine point and live music. I would say this is more than a good way to spend one autumn Saturday!

The following weekend, namely on October 18th, a three-day treat for cycling aficionados begins: the 8th Istria Granfondo International Marathon. Friday is reserved for registration, as well as chip and gift distribution. The big challenge itself begins on Saturday, when the Granfondo Small (91 km) and Classic (127 km) races are scheduled. The start is in Stella Maris, Umag, and the races go through beautiful Istrian regions by the sea and inland. By mileage you can tell that the marathon is intended for experienced cyclists, so if you are in this category, I believe this race is already on your list of things to do.

If, like me, you love cycling but do not “train” for the long distance rides, the Istria Granfondo Family & Gourmet Tour is the one for you. The ride will take place on Sunday in Novigrad, passing through the city and its surroundings on a total of 25 km of trails. Enough for a good workout and strengthening of form! Of course, you will also be able to taste delicious local delicacies at the refreshment station as part of the tour.

Come to Northwestern Istria and enjoy the autumn sports that everyone is talking about!
