Every one of us sometimes needs a bit of romance, and the holiday of love is the best opportunity to bring some into your life. They say that each one of us has a different idea of what romance is. For some, this can be the pleasure of spending time with a loved one in a secluded, but beautiful place, while for someone else, it is being proposed to in front of thousands of people on the soccer field after the game. Personally, I belong to the first group, and I for me, twilight is one of the most beautiful parts of the day. Fortunately, Istria, my home region, has many places that feature beautiful landscapes, that, at twilight, sparkle with the bright colors of the sunset. Some of my favorite spots for watching the sunset are on the northwestern coast of Istria.
Have you seen the postcards from Savudrija, the small fishing village on the far North of Istria, in which the little hanging boats at early twilight? Such scenes will leave almost any visitor breathless, and the greatest romantics will welcome the sunset embraced, next to the Savudrija lighthouse, a monument to the unhappy love of Austrian Count Metternich and a local noblewoman.
Umag is also abundant in places where it is possible to experience a wonderful sunset. I like to walk along the Umag promenade from the city center to Katoro and back. There you can literally have a drink at sunset with the sea sounds a few inches from your feet. A nice promenade with romantic sunsets can also be found in Novigrad, so do not skip it in your Valentine’s Day tour.
Places in the interior of Istria should not be missed when it comes to searching for spectacular sunset scenes: the view from the Momjan Castle near Buje or from the bell tower of St. Servulo in Buje at twilight is not easily forgotten. It’s time to plan your trip with your loved one!
