I, on the other hand, find it surprising that I even have to explain it! What do you mean why? Where would you find a quieter, calmer and more relaxing place than a vineyard? Do not mistake me, I do most of my sports activities, such as running and cycling, on an asphalt or macadam trail, and I have been known to visit a gym. However, in spring I prefer spending time in nature, out in the fresh air, relaxing under the sun. Where better than in Northwestern Istria, which features an abundance of picturesque vineyards, especially in the vicinity of Buje and Brtonigla?
Vineyards, and their surroundings contain all that I need in springtime, as well as that lovely calm which is impossible to imagine there at the end of the summer when everyone descends upon the green slopes for the grape picking. There is a saying among vinegrowers: “He who cuts, also picks”, which I often compare to the more famous one “A healthy mind in a healthy body”. I believe that effort put in, be it in the care of young vines or in the care of one’s own body and spirit, always yields desired results.
Exposure to the sun, the microclimate conditions, and the soft, Istrian soil are ideal for a quiet walk through a vineyard. I discovered that yoga and pilates are my spine’s best friends, so my yoga mat joins me on my vineyard walks for the obligatory stretching practice.
Dancing out in the open encourages movement in all the muscles without straining the joints and it also improves breathing. Badminton or Frisbees always bring about a playful atmosphere, as does light jogging over uneven terrain. Of course, when you go for a small recreational adventure, do not forget to bring comfortable clothes, a bottle of water and sun protection!
