Umag is permanently etched on the map of world athletes. This tournament and its accompanying events are visited by more than 100,000 visitors every year. I have been following tennis since I was little and it has forever been my greatest wish to visit Umag and enjoy this world famous tennis event. Of course, the sea, the sun and the beach are certainly an excellent additional motive for a visit. Apart from the awesome location, this tournament is made significant by major names from the world of tennis attending, such as Goran Ivanišević and Mansoura Bahrami, the pair of whom are playing an exhibition match this year, which I am eagerly anticipating.
That means there will certainly be no lack of fun and excitement, and I do not even have to mention that I am rooting for our Goran! In the regular part of the tournament, there will be matches featuring Kyle Edmund, the best-placed British tennis player who has, in the absence of Andy Murray, taken over the tennis supremacy of the British Isles, Andrej Rubljev, the defender of title from Russia and the Italian Marco Cecchinato, who is this year’s sensation of Roland Garros.
All eyes are, of course, on the title defender who joined the tournament last year because our own Borna Ćorić had to fold due to a neck injury. Rubljev surprised the entire tennis world with his win, and me, as well. But this time I believe it he will not have as easy a time, because the above mentioned Edmund is coming to the Umag Tournament for the first time. The popular and successful tennis players from the region, Damir Džumhur from BiH, Filip Krajinović from Serbia, Aljaž Bedene from Slovenia, Andreas Seppi from Italy, Marton Fucsovics from Hungary will be playing in Umag this year.
Many prominent athletes come to the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag because, as they point out, this is a truly special tournament. Umag is an unavoidable summer center for tennis, beauty, fun and socializing! I was particularly impressed by the fact that Umag was officially declared European Sports City 2018 by the Federation of European Sports Capitals and Cities. Another reason why Northwestern Istria is an excellent choice for all visitors. Are you counting the days until this amazing tennis even? I sure am!
