The real treat arrived at the very beginning! Tennis legends Goran Ivanišević and Goran Prpić played an exhibition match on July 13th, which also marked thirty years since their confrontation in the finals of the very first edition of the Umag tournament. The audience filled the stadium at Stella Maris and enjoyed the mastery of the two namesakes. Just like three decades ago, Prpić was the victorious one. However, this time they did not play for points or awards, but for a good atmosphere and a recall of a legendary match.
Four days later, Ivanišević played another interesting exhibition match in Umag, this time with Patrick Rafter, with whom he faced off 18 years ago in the historic finals at Wimbledon. The audience was simply delighted with another superb “re-run”, and the victory, as it in the unforgettable 2001 match, went to Goran.
In the regular competition at Umag, there were a number of prominent names from the tennis world, such as Fabio Fognini, Borna Ćorić, Robin Haase, Aljaž Bedene, Guido Pella, Dušan Lajović, Filip Krajinović, Laslo Djere, Marco Cecchinato, Atilla Balazs and Andrey Rublev. In a tough final night, for which tickets were sought after, Lajović and Balazs faced off, and the winning cup was ultimately raised by the 29-year-old Lajović, for whom this is also a first ATP career win. Bravo, Dušan!
During the ten-day tournament, visitors also enjoyed a rich party program and top quality delicacies within the indispensable Istria Gourmet Festival. Local star Tony Cetinski and the renowned foreign DJs W & W, Salvatore Ganacci, Gianluca Vacchi and Mike Candys made sure there was a great musical atmosphere, while rock fans enjoyed the energetic performance of the Queen Real Tribute Band. On the eve of Sunday’s final match, the traditional prize for the ATP Wine of the Year was handed out to the teran rosé by the Veralda Winery from Brtonigla.
The jubilee edition of the tournament was solemnly ended with the song “What a Wonderful World” and spectacular birthday fireworks that left everyone breathless. Umag loves you all, we’ll see you next year!
