At the opening, on July 13th, there will be a replay of the finals of the very first Croatia Open: an exhibition match between Croatian tennis legends, Goran Ivanišević and Goran Prpić. The two Gorans were quite high profile in the tennis world of the Nineties. Ivanišević has undoubtedly left a deeper trail, reaching second place in the ATP ranking and winning at Wimbledon. But way back when, it was Prpić who denied him the honor of becoming the first ever winner of Umag, by defeating his younger namesake in the finals. Now, thirty years later, Ivanišević will get another chance, at the ATP Stadium which proudly bears his name!
Wimbledon in Umag
Also, Patrick Rafter will get a chance for a re-match with Ivanišević! On July 17th, a repeat of one of the most exciting matches in the history of world tennis, the 2001 Wimbledon finals, will be held. It was in this match that a Croatian, invited by the organizers, defeated his Australian opponent in five tense sets and made tennis history.
A Fantastic Line-up
But Umag does not live in the past! The list of its players features former winner Fabio Fognini and local hope Borna Čorić. They will be joined by, among others, Robin Haase from the Netherlands, Aljaž Bedene from Slovenia, Guido Pella from Argentina, Dušan Lajovic, Filip Krajinović and Laslo Djere from Serbia as well as another two former winners, the Italian Marco Cecchinato and the Russian Andrey Rublev.
Party Till Dawn
The entertainment treats of the Umag Tournament are certainly the great celebratory concert by the Croatian pop star Tony Cetinski and a magnificent show to be prepared by the Queen Tribute Band. As for those real, edible treats, those will be waiting for you at the luscious Istria Gourmet Festival where you can enjoy all the colors of Istrian cuisine and winemaking. The party until dawn part will be taken care of by top DJs: W & W, Salvatore Ganacci, Gianluca Vacchi and Mike Candys.
