Grožnjan and I met for the first time just recently, on a beautiful day when it was neither warm nor cold. It was just like this: the weather was just right. I have to admit that I was attracted to the town via Instagram photographs of it by other visitors as well as those taken by my friends. And since I was already visiting Northwestern Istria, I did not want to miss out visiting this romantic town.
The Uniqueness of Grožnjan
Situated on a 228 meters high hill, Grožnjan is a unique artistic town in which you can see chairs, umbrellas and colorful plates being hung from houses… There is nothing ordinary in Grožnjan. And as you take a carefree walk down its paved streets, admiring each unique corner, on your left you will suddenly see a beautiful panorama of the nearby villages. While you are admiring this view, two grandmothers will be sipping their first cup of coffee at the “Z Gallery”, which is located on the very edge of the town. This feeling of carelessness, of being sheltered and in peace, has only ever been provided by Grožnjan for me.
Art All Around
Since 1965, Grožnjan has been inhabited by Croatian and Slovenian artists and musicians. It is due to this that most houses have been converted into studios and galleries. My visit happened at a time of the year when all the town activities are muted and in slow mode, so my experience of Grožnjan was complete zen. Later, I found out that the town often abounds in concerts, exhibitions and workshops, at which times it is not as easy to push through its narrow streets. I found the landscaped gardens enriched with various objects that leave you feeling like you are inside a home while actually outdoors particularly impressive.
