Should you decide to spend your free weekend in Istria’s Novigrad, you can’t go wrong! This small town that used to be a fishing village has a rich history and it’s a place that today offers a perfect escape from everyday life. This makes it a perfect weekend destination regardless of season, but, if you ask me, Novigrad is best experienced during the summer, when it’s full of life but still not overcrowded with tourists like some other popular destinations.
The first thing that will charm you about Novigrad is the old city center and the well-preserved 13th century walls from the days when Venice fought for control of the Adriatic. Taking a walk along the ancient fortifications on the shore is an experience that can take you back to an old and forgotten world.
When you get tired of walking, you can sit down at any one of the many coffee bars to rest and enjoy the most beautiful of Istrian sunsets. Charming wine bars, patisseries or fresh food restaurants will delight you with their exquisite culinary offers.
History buffs will enjoy the Lapidarium Museum which is bound to impress with its modern design and the Gallerion Gallery displaying the might of the Austro-Hungarian imperial and royal navy.
If nature is more your thing, take a bicycle ride down one of the numerous cycling tracks towards the Antenal-Mirna Ornithological Reservation near Novigrad. Should you opt to explore the interior, be sure not to miss the wine roads and various farms that will offer many Istrian culinary specialties.
I don’t usually plan out my weekends in Novigrad because the town and the nearby places are always the site of some interesting culinary and other types of events. So I simply use the local events tracker and I always have the Colours of Istria mobile app on my smartphone because it allows me to quickly find out what’s happening in town today.
