A Holiday Planner for Northwestern Istria

29 Nov 2018
Holidays, Northwestern Istria, Winter
by Suzana Badrov
I assume that to many the first things that comes to mind when they think of Northwestern Istria are sunny hills, numerous rows of olive groves, and the smells of irresistible wines … It is truly so there, during summer… and winter, too!

Yes, winter in Northwestern Istria also has its charms. It has as much to offer as the summer months, but with the added, special charms of the holiday season. Among other things, the enchanting smells and tastes, of course! But if you are a sports person like me, always looking for new adventures, then the holiday months in this part of Istria will be very active.

A Sports Welcome to 2019

If you have not yet begun to be plagued with the standard of this part of the year question of “Where are you going for New Year’s?” from all sides, preempt it by taking part in the New Year’s Bicycle Race traditionally organized on the first day of January in Northwestern Istria. The route runs through parts of the Parenzana, which you can also visit within a walking tour.

Awesome Holiday Food

Regardless of the traditional holiday feasting, you will surely have a bit of space left over for the irresistible squid-based courses, combined with local wines and local olive oils. The favorite specialty of the locals, the squid is in special focus in the (pre) holiday period when Days of Adriatic Squid are held.

The Inevitable Christmas Fairs

Wherever you go, you cannot avoid the fairs that will introduce you to the holiday season. A fair which will enchant you is the one held in Brtonigla. In search of gifts for your loved ones, you will surely have a hard time choosing between unique handcrafts, home-made wines and brandies, as well as many local products.

The UMAGic Holidays will contribute to the feeling of tradition, when numerous Umag streets and squares will come alive with seasonal concerts, the smell of fritule and mulled wine. It will also be joyful at the Christmas Fair in Novigrad, which will be held under a tent in the city center.

Round off the year and start the new one while enjoying the riches of Northwestern Istria!
