Snow is a veritable rarity in Istria, which means that for the most part what awaits you there is the sun. If you are not a fan of winter sports, a winter holiday on the coast will be a true delight. Long walks on the beach watching the sea bathed in sunlight (which is also bathing your face and hands)… it is truly amazing! You can even have coffee on a cafe terrace, as they are still open this time of the year. And if it gets too chilly even in the sun, there are always blankets to keep you warm while you enjoy the relaxing view of the beautiful Istria.
In comparison with the summer, when Umag, Novigrad, Buje and Brtonigla are filled with enthusiastic tourists enjoying the benefits of our warm climate, there are few guests in these towns in the winter, and they usually come for long weekends. That means less crowds in the cafes and restaurants, practically empty promenades and beaches, which means you will almost have each of these towns to yourself! Although the summer crowds have their own benefits, the winter atmosphere will surely suit those seeking some peace…
The fact that there are fewer guests doesn’t necessarily mean that the tourist offer is weaker. In fact, it is adapted to the season and follows its rhythm. That is why these days you can find dishes whose ingredients are the tastiest in the winter. Of these I most like the squid and seashells. Many eagerly await winter in order to visit Istrian towns for their wellness offer. That is exactly why the wellness treatments are particularly designed for the season and they can be enjoyed by everyone: men, women, professional and recreational athletes… each with their own needs and desires. And you thought that the only thing you could enjoy in the winter were long walks and sunsets! This corner of Istria always has much more to offer.
While we’re on the subject of activities, the traditional winter activity is hunting for squid. I have already written about my experiences with squid hunting in one of my previous blogposts, and I cannot wait for my next adventure. In the winter you can also cycle around these towns and explore the many clearly marked cycling trails. To discover more about them, check out the Colours of Istria brochures prepared for all cycling enthusiasts. In order to complete your ideal winter holidays at this destination make sure to get informed about current events in the region. There are many, and what they are all incredibly entertaining.
Treat yourself in the winter too
Treat yourself in the winter too, at least to a long weekend away. Get some rest and recharge your batteries at the beginning of the year in order to have the energy and enthusiasm for the daily grind. Northwest Istria can give you exactly what you need.
