If possible, come to Umag in the afternoon and ride along the gorgeous waterfront trail at sunset. After getting settled in, you can take a 30-kilometer ride, which will take you about three hours. The trail will guide you along the coast from Kator through Umag and up to Lovrečica, where you mustn’t miss out on visiting the oldest organ in Istria at the Church of St. Lawrence, dating back to 1773. If you speed up and get to Lovrečica ahead of time, you will just be one bay away from the beautiful CampingIN Park Umag, where you can take a rest. The way back will take you through the interior part of this area of Istria, or to be more precise, through the villages Čepljani, Vardica and Karpijan, and back to Kator. Choose your route based on when you plan to arrive; if you have plenty of time, head to the interior, towards Lovrečica, and come back along the coast. You can spend the night in the beautiful Kator, which also has a great selection of sports facilities, and serves as a great start for the different trails you can try on this weekend getaway.
Start out early because you have a long ride ahead, with many photos to take of the beautiful outdoors and different sites. But you can also take the opportunity to visit some fantastic wine cellars. The start of today’s route is the football field in Buje, from which you will head to the villages of Triban and Martinčići and then all the way to Grožnjan and Oprtalj. Your can take your first break in Grožnjan and the second in Oprtalj. Both towns have a beautiful view of the valley of river Mirna and the town of Motovun. Grožnjan also has a lot of little galleries and every spring it is the home to numerous art colonies.
Before Oprtalj don’t miss out on the chance to stop by Završje, which goes all the way back to Ancient Roman times. After Oprtalj head back to Buje via Sveta Lucija, Novak, Šterna and Marušić. Once at Marušić, head to the villages of Šajina and Črnci, and this will take you to Momjan. There you can stop for a lunch at the Stari Podrum tavern and drop by the Kozlović Winery. When you get to Momjan, you will be just a few kilometers away from Buje and your starting point. All in all, you will have passed between 5o and 60 kilometers, and together with breaks it will have taken you between 7 and 8 hours.
Make your Sunday ride an easy one. It is about 35 kilometers long and it will take about three hours. Head from your base, Kator towards Umag and then from Umag to Sveti Vrh and Savudrija via Petrovija and Valica. In Savudrija make sure to visit the 36-meter-tall lighthouse and take a break with a view of the Gulf of Piran. You can come back to Kator through Zambratija and Bašanija, where you will find the Degrassi wine cellar.
This cycling weekend you can cover between 100 and 120 kilometers: make your route on Friday and Sunday more casual and on Saturday a bit more demanding.
