The Adriatic Squid Days will be celebrated from December 1 to January 8 throughout Northwestern Istria. During the event, numerous restaurants and inns in Novigrad, Brtonigla, Buje, Savudrija and Umag will be offering a special menu of gourmet delicacies, created around the Adriatic squid.
Squid, also known as calamari, is at the height of its season during winter, from November through February, when it reaches full size and comes closer to land, making that much more easy to catch. Squid is a very versatile ingredient, mostly because of its mild sea aroma which makes it receptive for numerous flavors. Also, squid goes exquisitely well with the classic allies: olive oil, wine, lemon and fresh herbs.
You might not have been aware of this, but calamari has not always had the good reputation that makes it a must-try delicacy of the Mediterranean cuisine today. At first, squid were disdained as cheap, peasant food, only to become a very sought after ingredient at the local table. Soon afterwards, the tourists started to recognize calamari as a delicacy typical of the Mediterranean.
In the specially made menues with which the Adriatic Squid Days are celebrated, you will be able to taste, among other lovely dishes, ufigane (stewed) calamari, calamari under the čripnja (an oblong tin or earthenware pot baked in an open fire), salad calamari, barbecued squid, calamari brodet and stuffed squid… Be sure you do not forget to top this lovely gourmet story with one of the top quality Istrian wines. Enjoy!
