In the summer I have trouble leaving the coast, and I always keep going back to Istria because it is the only place where I can combine all my interests. That is why I am so fond of Bale – I can walk along the beautiful waterfront, go for a swim, and as I walk on the beach, look for the footprints of dinosaurs whose bones were found in this location!
Promenade Along the Rječina River
Canyons are always impressive. The promenade through the Rječina Canyon, which begins at Trsat and ends at the spring of the river, is a unique experience, although it is also physically demanding. It is at its most beautiful in the early fall, when the fall colors appear, but before the rains start.
There are also canyons in the nearby Slovenia. Although the system of karst caves that make up the Škocjan Caves is a world-renowned natural phenomenon due to its beauty, ecosystem and historical value, it is also impressive for being one of the biggest subterranean canyons in the world.
In the very south of Istria, the village of Premanatura includes the protected landscape of Kamenjak, which includes the 3,4-kilometer-long peninsula with beautiful beaches, and 11 uninhabited islets. Whether you are cycling, walking or swimming, not seeing Donji Kamenjak when you are in Istria is a real sin.
Special Ornithological Reserve Palud
A true little haven for children and birdwatchers can be found between Bale and Rovinj: it is the special ornithological reserve Palud. Birdwatching is an activity that requires patience, but catching a glimpse of one of the 291 species of birds that live here, whether it is with a naked eye, binoculars or a camera, gives one an indescribable feeling achievement. Perhaps that explains why birdwatching has been constantly increasing in popularity ever since the late 19th century.
Zarečki krov Cave
The beautiful waterfall of the Pazinčica rivulet outside the town of Pazin is breathtaking, and swimming in its little lake and under the waterfall next to the Zarečki krov Cave is an unforgettable experience. For those who find Pazinčica rivulet too cold even in the summer, they can take a walk on the promenade along the rivulet through a beautiful woody area, a perfect activity for the high summer temperatures.
Rafting on Soča River
The Slovenian river most famous for its emerald color reflected off the white stone is one of the best rafting rivers in this part of Europe. Explore its gorgeous rapids!
All history buffs will be fascinated by Ermada Mountain, overlooking Trst in Italy. What is interesting is that the mountain fort remained unconquered throughout history, and today it leaves visitors breathless with its beauty and centuries-old trails, hideaways and lookouts.
East of the Lim Channel you will find the hill of St. Martin, whose south slope hides the protected karst cave, famous for the colonies of an endangered bat species. You can only visit it in the spring and early summer, so that the animals will not be disturbed.
Take a walk along one of the most beautiful trails around Trst and visit the lookouts that provide a breathtaking view of the entire Gulf of Trieste.
Kotli (Kotle) Waterfall
The waterfall with two names, situated on a river with two names is a truly enchanting place. This is not only because the locals call Rečina River, to which the waterfall belongs to, Mirna, but also because the natural scenery here seems to be quite surreal and fantastic.
Šijana Forest Park
Winding paths, rare trees and legends of conspiracy are an essential part of one of the most beautiful and often unfairly overlooked landscapes in Pula.
A short excursion is the best gift: it does not take up too much time, it brings new experiences and deepens the bond you have with the region you are in.
