From small, award-winning boutique hotels, such as San Rocco in Brtonigla to Maestral in Novigrad and other great hotels in Umag, like Sol Garden Istria, Sol Umag or Melia Coral to fairy tale-like villas dotted around its entire northwest, Istria will thrill you not only with the scope but also with the diversity of summer choices.
Camping sites par excellence
Camping in Istria has a long tradition and the number of camping sites is large – you can find one or two in almost every place. Still, reserve a spot in time because all Istrian camps are very popular – be they top class, with pools and various amenities or simple and closer to nature. Most welcome pets so you can really take your entire family for a vacation!
Northwestern Istria abounds with events, especially during summer. Open air concerts, film festivals, fishermen’s fiestas and many other events will capture the hearts and minds of every visitor, be they lovers of fine food (Gnam Gnam Festival), fine wine (Malvasia Wine Festival, In the Kingdom of Muškat Wine Festival), painting (Vizura Aperta and Painter’s Ex Tempore Contest), music (Parkfest, Jazz is Back!) or simply love exploring local tradition (Etno Fest).
Istrian beaches are as enchanting as the peninsula itself: there are pebbled beaches, such as the Katoro beach near Umag; sandy beaches, such as Zambratija or Kanegra near Buje. There are also rocky beaches, such as the Karigador beach near Brtonigla. And there are beaches that combine it all, such as Villa Rita in Umag or Punto mare in Novigrad.
A perfect place for children
Apart from perfect beaches and a rich local animation offer, Istria is also the favorite summer spot for kids because it’s full of fun events aimed specifically at them. Novigrad becomes a circus for a few days each summer and near Brtonigla there are tall slides, water castles and the best water adventure available: the Istralandia Aquapark! Just a little to the south, near Funtana, lies Dinopark, the main part of every dinosaur search expedition along the Istrian coast, which is the largest site of dinosaur remains in the Mediterranean.
A little romance for you
Nothing says romance like a beautiful sunset! Novigrad’s sunsets are becoming world known, and for good reason. But that’s not all Istria can offer. It’s also home to the most romantic fishing village in the world, Savudrija. Savudrija’s hanging boats, romantic tales of its lighthouse and its old Roman walls make it a great place to fall in love. With its lovely hills, famous local wine and warm summer evenings, romance is one of Istria’s best-loved hosts.
Sports for everyone
There’s never just one sport in Istria. There’s the world famous ATP Tennis Tournament in Umag for those who equate tennis with summer. Istria’s amazing nature makes almost any location also a perfect diving spot. Bicycle lovers can ride its 500-kilometer long cycling routes while water sports lovers can learn how to windsurf or play some beach volleyball.
