From the seafood to hearty meat dishes, and anything in-between, food here is delicious. In fact, the only problem I have with a food in the northwest Istria is that when I visit it, there are just too many places where I want to eat, and never enough time. My favorites include every specialty there is at San Rocco, innovative dishes at the restaurant Marina in Novigrad, and the best sashimi you’ll ever try at Damir & Ornella.
The best Istrian winemakers are located in the northwestern Istria: Kozlovic, Cuj, Kabola and Degrassi, to name just few. Typical wines are red wine Teran, white wine Istrian Malvazija, and a sweet dessert wine Muškat Žuti. A visit to wineries in this area is a must. And whenever I come I visit at least one of them. The wines are also cheaper when purchased at the winery.
Istria is a popular cycling destination and the northwest Istria even more so. With over 500 km of marked and maintained cycling trails, northwest Istria is a great place to enjoy cycling holidays whether you are experienced or beginner cyclist. The trails run from the flat seaside to hilly hinterland, past many olive groves, vineyards, forests, and valleys. You can enjoy beautiful scenery, and profit from many vantage points to take in the views along the way. My favorite trails are: a quite demanding Parenzana trail, and easy peasy coastal trail from Umag to Novigrad.
4. Having a drink at Vitriol
I know, you can have a drink anywhere, but Vitriol is not like anywhere. Vitriol is Istria’s best sunset café bar. Located in Novigrad, right by the sea, it’s the best place to watch the sunsets while drinking your glass of wine and nibbling on olives and crisps. The Vitriol has a great choice of Istrian wines by glass, imported beers, delicious cakes, coffees, ice creams, and one of the best Aperol Spritz in the region.
5. Partying in Umag
Umag has the best parties in all Istria. The best night clubs are located in Stella Maris Resort just few kilometers north of Umag. At the heart of Polynesia tourist resort, you’ll find the Saint & Sinner beach bar. Open just two years ago, this bar gained popularity quickly. It’s stylish, and hosts absolutely the best after beach parties. The Jimmy Woo, located in the Stella Maris Resort, is another popular night club where you can dance a night away. Resident and guest Djs plays mostly house music. Besides regular clubbing, Umag hosts the best live concerts and festivals. Umagination festival marks a perfect start of summer partying along the Adriatic coast. This two-day electronic music festival features popular DJs. Previous line-up included: FatBoy Slim, DJ Tiesto, and Axwel. With performers like Montserrat Caballe, 2Cellos, British R’n’B star Estelle, and Gabrielle, summer concerts in Umag are also not to be missed.
